Lash Extension FAQ’s

Everything you ever wanted to know about Lash Extensions + more

Eyelash extensions are single synthetic lashes applied directly to the natural lash, close to (but not touching) the lash line with a semi-permanent bonding adhesive. A single extension is applied to a single lash, leaving the eyelashes and eyelids to move freely. They are applied carefully, one by one, WITH LOVE, using specially designed tweezers. The whole process takes 1 – 2 hours depending on how many lashes are applied.

As long as six weeks – as the eyelash extension generally lasts until the natural lash falls out in its natural cycle. However it is advisable to have fills done approximately every 2.5 – 3.5 weeks (depending on how well you take care of them) to make sure your eyelashes always look fabulous, as by this stage some would have fallen out as new lashes have grown through. How long your eyelash extensions last also depends on how you care for them (i.e. by removing makeup correctly, not coating them with heaps of mascara, and not tugging/pulling at your eyelash extensions. Also, I have to say that as a yoga teacher myself, I do notice that hot yoga really effs up lashes, so be advised. However, some clients who take extra good care of their lashes get 4+ weeks before they need fills.

Generally you will need a fill in approximately 2 1/2 weeks. Of course this varies for everyone based on their lifestyle, home care and  hair growth. The eyelash extensions fall out with your natural lash cycle – which is 6-8 weeks, so very gradually – just a few here and there as new baby lashes come through. After about 3 weeks you will start seeing little gaps where the old ones have fallen, and new ones are coming through – so at this point it’s a good time to get fills, so your lashes always look nice and full.

A standard full set of eyelashes, consisting of around 40-45 lashes per eye costs $150, or for a dramatic set, it is $250 for around 80 – 85 lashes per eye (or as many as I can get on there). Insert smiley face. It really all depends on the look you are hoping to achieve. Fills generally cost between $60 – $120, depending on how many lashes you have lost.

No – I apply eyelash extensions taking special care to ensure that they are all applied individually and correctly to maintain your eyelash health. To ensure the ongoing health of your lashes, I highly recommend that you take my advice regarding the maximum thickness and length that would be appropriate long-term for your natural lashes. The eyelash extensions come off when your natural lash falls out, and so long as an appropriate weight extension has been applied, your natural lashes will grow through as normal. Please listen to my advice about how long/heavy you should go if you have naturally thin or sparse lashes. Trust me girl, I know what I’m talking about. Insert wink here. Don’t try to remove the eyelash extensions yourself – as this could easily damage your natural lashes, as the adhesive bond is extremely strong.

Sometimes clients choose not to take my advice regarding the lashes and do request extra long and thick lashes be applied to their thin or fine natural lashes. I will advise against this but ultimately the choice is yours. I will apply the lashes that you request. Usually as a one-off or special occasion wear, this will cause no problems at all, but long-term it can weaken your lashes.

Inexperienced technicians or those who rush (beware beauty salons who do not specialize!) are apt to apply lashes that are too heavy/clumped together which can definitely result in damaged lashes. My aim at Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio is to give you beautiful lashes all the time, with no damage to your natural lashes. I customize the lashes so they are the right weight + thickness, and apply them carefully, one by one, so that your natural lashes remain as healthy as ever!

If you are still concerned, and are a little lash-obsessed (don’t worry, I am too!), I recommend using a growth formula that helps strengthen and condition your natural lashes. Ask me for the best suggestions.

No. I am often asked ‘are eyelash extensions painful?’ and the answer is no – not if applied properly! The eyelash extensions are applied directly to the eyelash, so there is no contact with the skin. It may feel a little unusual the first time, but once you get used to it, it should be so comfortable that you may drift off to sleep! Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio uses high quality relatively fume-free glue, which does not burn or sting, unlike cheaper products. People with extremely sensitive eyes or sinus problems may get some watering and slight stinging at the end, but this subsides within seconds.

No – once your eyelash extensions are applied, they will feel just like your normal lashes – you shouldn’t feel any difference. The eyelash extension is bonded to the actual lash, not your eyelid skin, so it feels just like your normal lashes. One extension is applied to each lash individually, so your eyelashes can move freely. You should be careful not to roughly rub your eyes though, as this can damage the extensions could make them a little uncomfortable.

The glue that I use is Butyl (Butyl Cyanoacrylate) which is an adhesive that is commonly used in the Medical and Cosmetic Industry. It’s a bit more costly than the commonly used glues in the cosmetic Industry but has greater bonding power, more flexibility and most importantly, safe and non-irritating to the eyes. I use new and fresh glue to make sure I keep and have the best products for our clients.

In most cases, yes – but if you have had particularly bad extensions done somewhere else (particularly places that do them quickly and cheaply), I cannot absolutely guarantee that I will be able to remove them or apply new ones immediately. It depends on how bad a state your lashes are in. If there is an awful lot of glue and many lashes fused together, it can take some time to remove the extensions gently. If the bad extensions have irritated or infected your eyes/eyelids Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio reserves the right not to perform the procedure, and may refer you to initially seek medical advice.

Generally speaking, eyelash extensions are a safe and non-invasive cosmetic procedure Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio uses a high-quality, low fume adhesive which is manufactured specifically for cosmetic use near the eye, and the adhesive does not actually ever touch your skin – as the extensions are glued to the eyelash hairs. Allergic reactions to the adhesive are very rare (1 in several thousand) and when they do present, are easily treated.

In saying this, I do not recommend that pregnant women who have never had eyelash extensions before test out the procedure during their pregnancy or consult their physician. The reasons are two-fold – firstly, the lash extension procedure requires you to lay flat on your back for over one hour; a position that is not recommended for women in the advanced stages of pregnancy. It also requires that you lie quite still – which can be hard if you’re heavily pregnant! Secondly, if you were unlucky enough to have an allergic reaction, your doctor may not be able to give you the required treatment due to your pregnancy, prolonging the reaction. However – if I have been doing your lashes here at Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio and you become pregnant, there’s no problem continuing with the extensions – just let me know so that we can make sure you are comfortable at all times!

The main thing is to have clean eyes and eyelashes, free of makeup – especially mascara. Some mascaras contain oils that can prevent eyelash extensions bonding correctly. Be sure to use an oil-free makeup remover if removing makeup, and don’t use any oil or petroleum based products on or around the eye area for 48 hours prior (such as Vaseline or moisturizers). ~Do not have your eyelashes permed – it is very difficult for us to apply extensions on lashes which have been permed within the last 3 months, as often the extensions will not bond correctly. Don not drink caffeine prior to appointment as you will be lying down for an hour or so.

Yes, you can. Eyeliner and eye shadow are fine – you just need to be a little gentle. I don’t recommend that you apply mascara to your eyelash extensions, as this can cause them to clump together and may contain oils that weaken the adhesive bond on your eyelash extensions, so they will not last as long. If you are intent on wearing mascara, Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio stocks a mascara made specifically for use on eyelash extensions – we may not be able to fill your extensions if there is too much mascara coating the lashes, and may need to apply a new set**

You must use an OIL FREE makeup remover, as oil based removers will damage the adhesive and could make the eyelash extensions fall off prematurely. Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio stocks a high quality makeup remover that is formulated specifically for eye lash extensions.

Yes. In fact this is one of the best things about eyelash extensions – you will have pretty eyes ALL the time – when you wake up, straight out of the shower, out of the pool. Just don’t rub them or use detergents or oily soaps and they will last a long time.

Like all cosmetic products, there are some individuals who may be allergic to this particular adhesive. Allergic reactions are extremely rare however, and subside normally as soon as the extensions are removed. If you have extreme latex/band-aid allergies, you may be at higher risk of a reaction. If you have had an allergic reaction to any eyelash extensions before (swollen, puffy eyelids and under eye area) we do not recommend getting lash extensions again – as it is highly likely you will be allergic again. If you do have an allergic reaction, you must seek medical attention and we will need to remove the extensions as soon as possible.

A note on being sick:
We all get sick from time to time and Jasmine Skin Care + Lash Studio reserves the right to send you home with an order for chicken noodle soup and bed rest if you are sniffly and coughing. Please understand that I am a one-woman operation and if I get sick, my poor little chihuahua will have to get out & get a job. (And truthfully, I think she is kinda lazy…) So, please, please do not come in when you are sick. Apologies.

Yes, I have gift vouchers for any amount. They are a perfect gift for that glamorous friend who has everything!

Yes, appointments are generally necessary. Our evening appointments (between 5 – 7.30pm) are the most popular and can sometimes book out weeks ahead. Please contact me to arrange a time that suits you.

For new clients, I take a valid credit card to hold the appointment and all  missed appointments (not canceled within 12 hours) are subject to a cancellation fee. The reason for this is because it is a big chunk of time that could be filled with another client.

There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you get the most out of your eyelash extensions. At your appointment, I give you an after-care card outlining how to take care of them, the main things to remember are:

  • Do not wet them for 24 hours after application/fills so that the adhesive cures properly
  • Use only oil-free products, especially makeup remover
  • Do not rub them or pull at them
  • Do not use a mechanical eyelash curler
  • If exposed to chlorine, rinse off gently with fresh water afterwards
  • Gently brush them with your lash-wand
  • It’s best not to use mascara on them if possible!
  • Cleanse them properly
  • Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and bikram/hot yoga where possible

Almost everybody can use eyelash extensions to increase the appeal and look of their eyes. The difference will be instant – your eyes will look sparkly and refreshed immediately! As the glue is applied directly to the eyelash, and does not touch the skin, there is very rarely any issue with allergic reactions.
